Clark State/Stark State Joint Program Approved for Funding through Project Steno

As National Court Reporting & Captioning Week gets underway, Clark State Community College and joint program partner school Stark State College are pleased to announce the approval of the Project Steno partnership. Clark State and Stark State have offered the joint Judicial Court Reporting program since June of 2016. Project Steno promotes the stenographic court reporting/captioning profession through social media and community outreach, with the goal of building a robust pipeline of students into school and graduating them in two years. Being a Project Steno-approved program now allows the Clark State/Stark State program to offer Project Steno’s tuition assistance to students who complete the National Court Reporters Association’s (NCRA) free A to Z program prior to enrolling in the Judicial Court Reporting program.

Phillips, Ball Named Chair, Vice Chair of Clark State Board of Trustees

The Clark State Community College Board of Trustees has appointed Brad Phillips as chairman of the Board and David Ball as vice chairman of the Board. Their terms began on January 15 and are a one-year tenure. Phillips has served on the Clark State Board of Trustees for eight years, most recently as vice chairman. He has also served on the Board Finance Committee. He is president and an owner of Phillips Companies in Beavercreek. David Ball, senior vice president – law for Speedway LLC, has been named vice chair of the Clark State Board of Trustees. Ball has been with Speedway for more than 12 years and served on the Clark State Board of Trustees since 2015. Ball has also served on the Clark State Foundation Board of Directors.

Clark State to Celebrate Grand Opening of New Xenia Location

Clark State Community College will celebrate the REACH Center Grand Opening on Sunday, February 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Xenia YMCA, 336 Progress Drive in Xenia. Clark State, in collaboration with the City of Xenia, Kettering Health Network, the YMCA of Greater Dayton, the Xenia Adult Recreation and Services Center and Central State University broke ground on the new facility in the spring of 2018. The partnership addresses educational, health and workforce needs in Greene County.

Clark State, Mercy Health to Host Dinner Celebrating Black History Month, Address Mental Health in Black Community

Clark State Community College will recognize Black History Month with a February calendar full of events and opportunities for students and the community. As part of the annual Black History Month celebration, Clark State and Mercy Health-Springfield will host a third annual community dinner event on Thursday, February 21. The theme of the event is “Mental Health in the Black Community” and will feature a panel of local health experts. The dinner event is free and open the public, although seating is limited.

Clark State Performing Arts Center to Bring Monster of a Show to Town on Valentine’s Day

The Clark State Community College Performing Arts Center will welcome “Frankenstein” to the stage on Thursday, February 14. This classic novel brought to life is presented by the Aquila Theatre of London. Written two centuries ago in 1818 by Mary Shelley, Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus is the first true science fiction novel. Clark State President Dr. Jo Alice Blondin will hold a discussion of the groundbreaking Frankenstein novel and its continued relevance in today’s society prior to the start of the show. The pre-show Frankenstein novel lecture with Dr. Blondin will begin at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, February 14. The Aquila Theatre Company will present Frankenstein beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Clark State in Beavercreek to Hold Job Fair, Open House for Students, Graduates, Public

Clark State Community College will hold a Job and Internship Fair and Open House on Tuesday, February 12 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Greene Center location, 3775 Pentagon Boulevard in Beavercreek. The Job and Internship Fair and Open House will provide Clark State students, graduates and the public with a place to meet with local employers and explore programs and services offered at Clark State. Many of the attending employers plan to offer interviews at the fair. Job seekers are encouraged to bring several resumes and dress for success.

CeCe Winans to Grace the Stage of the Clark State Performing Arts Center

The Clark State Community College Performing Arts Center will welcome best-selling female gospel artist CeCe Winans to the stage on Saturday, February 16 at 8 p.m. Recording and performing as both a solo artist and as a duo with her brother BeBe, Winans has influenced a generation of gospel and secular vocalists over the course of her career. In addition to her 10 Grammy Awards, she has received 20 Dove Awards and 7 Stellar Awards. She has sold more than 5 million albums in the United States and topped the gospel charts numerous times. Clark State to Host CyberSecurity Awareness Day

Clark State Community College will host a CyberSecurity Awareness Day on Friday, January 25 at the Beavercreek location, 3775 Pentagon Boulevard; and on Friday, February 1 at the Springfield campus, 570 East Leffel Lane in LRC Security National Bank Community Rooms 207/209. Clark State faculty, staff, students and high school students will learn about career opportunities and possible internships in the field of cybersecurity.

Clark State to Induct New Class of Scholars

Clark State Community College will hold an induction ceremony for the new class of students selected for the Clark State Scholars Program. The Scholars Program is a participatory program for students entering eighth grade that, if successfully completed, results in three years of tuition-free education at Clark State through the efforts of the Clark State Foundation. This year’s class includes 40 Champion City Scholars from Springfield City middle schools, 20 Champaign County Scholars from Graham and Urbana middle schools and 20 Clark County Scholars from Clark-Shawnee and Tecumseh middle schools.

Clark State and Mercy Health to Begin Construction on Health Clinic

The Clark State Community College Board of Trustees has voted to approve a contract between Clark State and Mercy Health for a new health clinic on Clark State’s Springfield campus on Leffel Lane. Kapp Construction will begin construction on the approximately 1,750 square foot facility in February. The new health clinic will be located in the Applied Science Center and will serve as the primary medical care facility for Clark State students, faculty, staff and the community at large. It will also likely be used for student clinical experiences and internships.

Clark State, City of Springfield to Host 29th Annual MLK, Jr. Luncheon

Clark State Community College and the City of Springfield will host the 29th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Luncheon on Friday, January 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the Grand Hall of the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center, 275 South Limestone Street in downtown Springfield. Marya Rutherford Long, vice president at Fifth Third Bank of Dayton and Cincinnati will be the featured guest speaker, and the City of Springfield will present a Giving Citizen of the Year Award. Springfield City Schools will honor Girl Scouts of Western Ohio and Shawnee Oak Wind as outstanding youth programs. Local high school students will be presented with the Peacemaker Awards.

Clark State Develops Indoor Walking Trails to Support Health and Wellness of Campus Community

Clark State Community College continues making strides toward a healthy community of faculty, staff and students with the addition of indoor walking trails. Clark State created indoor walking trails on the Springfield campus, complete with maps and directional footsteps. Maps marking the starting points of the indoor trails are posted at entrances in the LRC, Rhodes Hall and the Applied Science Center. Walkers will also notice footsteps at each starting point, along with coordinating numbers equating the distance of each trail. The maps for the indoor walking trails are available in Clark State’s mobile app “Clark State Connect” for easy access.

Clark State’s Therese Filicko Appointed to AACC Faculty Advisory Council

Therese Filicko, associate professor of political science at Clark State Community College, has been appointed to the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Faculty Advisory Council. She was nominated by Clark State President Dr. Jo Alice Blondin and later interviewed by two members of the Council. Filicko has taught at Clark State since 2012. She has served as Faculty Senate chair and is currently chair of Ohio Faculty Senate of Community and Technical Colleges and co-chair of the Faculty Congress of Ohio.

Clark State Xenia Location Now Open for Enrollment

Clark State Community College is open for student enrollment at its new Xenia location at the Xenia YMCA, 336 South Progress Drive. Classes will begin on Monday, January 14. Day and evening classes will be offered along with child care for those who need it. Clark State’s goal is to help develop the workforce in Greene County to fill jobs in the county and surrounding areas. Clark State will focus on health careers at the Xenia campus and will offer general transfer degrees. At full capacity, the classrooms will allow Clark State to serve approximately 300-400 students.

Rock of Ages Will Bring Music of the ‘80s to the Clark State Performing Arts Center

The Clark State Community College Performing Arts Center will revisit the music of the ‘80s with the Tenth Anniversary Tour of Rock of Ages at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, January 17. It’s 1987 on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip when a small-town girl meets a big city rocker. As they fall in love in L.A.’s most famous rock club, Rock of Ages allows fans to rock out once again to their favorite ‘80s hits. Featuring the music of iconic bands such as Styx, Poison, Twisted Sister and Whitesnake among many others.

Clark State Police Academy Graduates Ready to Serve, Protect

Clark State Community College will hold a graduation ceremony for cadets of the Peace Officer Training Academy at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 9, 2019, in the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center in downtown Springfield. Paul Weber, commander of the Clark State Police Academy, said Clark State is sending well-trained cadets into the workforce, and he is confident they will make excellent police officers. Clark State offers four peace officer training academies each year—four-month daytime academies and six-month evening academies are each held twice a year.

Clark State to Welcome Higher Education Expert Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab to Performing Arts Center for Public Event

Clark State Community College will welcome higher education expert Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab to the Performing Arts Center on January 23. She is best known for her innovative research on food and housing insecurity in higher education and for her work on making public higher education free. Clark State President Jo Alice Blondin will facilitate a discussion on food and housing insecurities for college students beginning at 3:30 p.m. Dr. Goldrick-Rab’s formal lecture will begin at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Clark State Theatre Arts Program to Hold Auditions for The Lion in Winter

The Clark State Community College Theatre Arts program will hold auditions for The Lion in Winter at 7 p.m., January 29 and 30 in the Turner Studio Theatre at the Clark State Performing Arts Center, 300 South Fountain Avenue in downtown Springfield. The Lion in Winter is a family drama set in 1183 at the court of Henry II and was written by James Goldman. The Lion in Winter will be directed by Scott Stoney who is a founding member and resident artist at the Human Race Theatre Company in Dayton and a member Actors' Equity Association.The Lion in Winter is slated for performance at 8 p.m. April 5, 6, 12 and 13; and 2 p.m. April 7 and 14 in the Turner Studio Theatre.

Clark State Scholars Program Continues Growth, Expands into County Schools

The Clark State Community College Foundation Scholars program expanded from the Springfield City School District into Champaign County last year with the addition of Graham Local School District and Urbana City Schools. This year, the program has expanded even further and has recruited its first class of scholars from the Clark-Shawnee Local School District and Tecumseh Local School District. The Clark State Foundation Scholars program offers three years of college at Clark State at no cost to the students upon graduation.
