Clark State College’s Theatre Arts Program will present "Steel Magnolias," a play by Robert Harling that delves into the lives of six women navigating love, loss and laughter in Louisiana.
Auditions for the production are open to both college students and community members. Monologue auditions will take place at 7 p.m. on Jan. 28 in the Turner Studio Theatre at the Clark State Performing Arts Center, 300 S. Fountain Avenue. Callbacks are scheduled for Jan. 29 at the same time and location.
Individuals who wish to audition are encouraged to preregister at https://go.clarkstate.edu/steal-magnolias and prepare a one-minute monologue from a contemporary play. Headshots and resumes are preferred but are not required. Rehearsals begin in early February, leading up to performances on April 4-6 and 13-15.
Set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Louisiana, "Steel Magnolias" showcases an ensemble of characters including Truvy, a wise-cracking salon owner; Annelle, her quirky assistant; Ouiser, a rich curmudgeon; Clairee, an eccentric millionaire; and M'Lynn and Shelby, mother and daughter. With a blend of humor and heart, the play explores themes of friendship, resilience and strength in the face of tragedy.
“We are excited to bring 'Steel Magnolias' to life and share this touching story with our community,” said Theresa Lauricella, Clark State theatre professor and program coordinator. “The play beautifully captures the essence of female friendship and the strength that comes from supporting one another through life's challenges.”
April 4-6 and 13-15 performances are at 7 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays.
Tickets, which are at $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors, can be purchased here.
The production is produced by Lauricella and directed by Jimmy Straley and Annie Nereng.
