Clark State to Record Active Shooter Training Video

June 1, 2021

Clark State College will be recording an active shooter training video for the purpose of educating Clark State faculty, staff, and students on responding to an active shooter on campus.

Paul Weber, commander of the Clark State Police Academy, said the training video will cover three important topics: where the class would hide during an active shooter; when the class would fight the intruder, and where the class would run if the opportunity would present itself.

“(Clark State) president Dr. Jo Alice Blondin felt the need to prepare, educate and train Clark State faculty, staff, and students on the importance of knowing what to do and what options there are in an active shooter event,” said Weber.

A mock shooting event will be recorded at the Clark State Brinkman Educational Center (downtown Springfield), the financial aid office, and a classroom at the applied science center on the Leffel Lane campus.

“The video will include active shooter scenarios in an office space and two classrooms,” said Crystal Jones, vice president of marketing, diversity and community impact at Clark State. “The purpose is to provide specific examples of applying Run-Hide-Fight guidance within our spaces.”

Jones said faculty and staff are the intended audiences, therefore, they can help protect students, community members, and each other.

“The college prides itself in putting the safety of students, community members, faculty, and staff at the forefront,” said Jones.

The active shooter training videos will be recorded on Friday, June 4, with actor portrayals of possible scenarios.
