Clark State Students Collecting Jeans to Help Keep New Homeowners Warm

November 18, 2014

Clark State Community College students who are members of Phi Theta Kappa honors fraternity and Student Senate have partnered with Habitat for Humanity to collect blue jeans that will be recycled into denim insulation for homes built by the organization.

“Our goal is to collect at least 100 pairs of jeans to send to Bonded Logic to be turned into denim insulation,” said Susie Saldivar, Clark State student and member of Phi Theta Kappa and Student Senate. “We can take denim in any condition, any color and any size.”

Bonded Logic recycles the garments and donates the denim insulation to Habitat for Humanity chapters to be used in the homes they build. Denim insulation is a nontoxic alternative to fiberglass insulation and flame retardant. Spun, candy-floss-like, from 90 percent post-consumer denim fibers, it is free of substances such as carcinogens, formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds.

The project, happening on only three college campuses in the country, is being led by Clark State students Danny Malone and Susie Saldivar. Members of Phi Theta Kappa work on a community service project each year. The fraternity partnered with Student Senate and Student Ambassadors to help make the project a success. Donations can be made at all campus locations before the end of November.
