Clark State Students Awarded Kristen Yarger Memorial Scholarship from SHRMA

May 19, 2015

Clark State Community College students Leigha Ross and Robin Starner have been awarded the 2015 Kristen Yarger Memorial Scholarship from the Springfield Human Resources Management Association (SHRMA).

Lynn Geist, Clark State adjunct instructor, recommended Ross (Enon) and Starner (Urbana) for the annual scholarship. They each will receive $1,000 towards furthering their education at Clark State. SHRMA awards four scholarships to students pursuing a career in human resources management.

Geist said Ross is not only a dependable, hard-working student but an outstanding person as well. “She seeks out advice, takes feedback seriously and makes changes or updates to provide the best work product possible. She is the type of student that every instructor enjoys teaching.” she said.

Geist said it was a pleasure to recommend Starner for the SHRMA scholarship. “She participates regularly and works hard. I appreciate the leadership Robin shows in the classroom and with her classmates.”

SHRMA is a professional organization that provides a means for the exchange of ideas and the discussion of concerns in human resources. To qualify for the annual SHRMA scholarships, students must maintain a minimum grade-point-average of a 3.0, be pursuing a career in human resources management and complete an application with an essay and letter of recommendation.

The Kristen Yarger scholarship fund was created in 1990. As an active member of SHRMA, Yarger served as education chair for several years, and her goal was to instill in students a love and professionalism of human resources as a career.
