Erica Kelly, a Clark State student in the diagnostic medical sonography program, has been awarded the 2024 Excellence in Sonography Student Award from BB Imaging for her academic achievement, demonstrating a passion for sonography, elevating the industry through her skills and inspiring others.

“This award recognizes Erica for the outstanding emerging professional that she is,” said Megan Platfoot, Clark State's DMS program director.  “Erica is an exceptional student and a supportive mentor to her classmates. As she continues her journey in sonography, she stands as a role model for her peers, exemplifying hard work, empathy and a commitment to excellence in both academic and patient care settings. Erica is well-positioned to make significant contributions to the future of healthcare and we couldn’t be prouder.”

Recently passing the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation Registry, Kelly has focused her studies on abdominal, vascular and obstetric and gynecological sonography. She will graduate in December 2024.

A non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to create internal images of the body, diagnostic medical sonographers, or sonographers, use these images to help doctors diagnose and treat a variety of medical conditions.

Clark State College’s DMS program received accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs in the abdominal-extended, obstetrics and gynecology, and vascular concentrations in 2022.

“Accreditation through CAAHEP opens doors to expanded opportunities for our students both before and after graduation,” said Platfoot. “It allows us to continue to provide the best education possible to our DMS students and to work closely with our clinical affiliates to help bring more sonographers to the workforce.”

With the program currently at full capacity – 28 students enrolled – Clark State’s DMS program combines didactic and clinical learning experiences that lead graduates to jobs with hospitals, private physician practices, diagnostic imaging centers, research departments and ultrasound machine manufacturers.
