Clark State Community College will hold a Humanities Colloquium from 3:30 - 5 p.m., Thursday, April 14 in LRC 207/209 on the Leffel Lane campus in Springfield.
This year’s topic is “The Value of the Humanities in the 21st Century.” The public event, sponsored by the Arts and Sciences Division, will feature three speakers.
Dr. Anthony Milburn (Ph.D., The Ohio State University) is an expert on American, African American, Native American, Russian/Soviet, Asian and World History; Literature; and Philosophy. His main area of focus is the military experience of Black America. Dr. Milburn has also served on the Governor’s Commissions for celebration of the state’s bicentennial and the War of 1812.
Dr. William B. Irvine (Ph.D., UCLA) is professor of philosophy at Wright State University. He is the author of several books, including A Guide to the Good Life: The Ancient Art of Stoic Joy and, most recently, Aha!: The Moments of Insight That Shape Our World. He is currently at work on a multi-disciplinary, multi-dimensional history of mankind.
Dr. Jim Malarkey (Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin) is professor emeritus at Antioch University Midwest in Yellow Springs. Jim served as chair of humanities and general education until retiring last year. He is most known for developing a unique team that taught World Classics Curriculum for working adults. After 9/11 Jim contributed a number of teach-ins, workshops and courses concerning the Middle East. His most recent publication is an anthology of translations he co-edited, Desert Songs of the Night: 1500 Years of Arabic Literature.
Clark State Assistant Professor Therese Filicko said the event aims to promote awareness of the role of the humanities.
