Clark State’s Phi Theta Kappa to Hold Induction Ceremony

April 26, 2017

Alpha Nu Lambda, Clark State Community College’s chapter of the international honor society Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), will hold a spring induction ceremony at 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 26 at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center in downtown Springfield.

Naureen Qasim, associate professor in the health, human and public services division, has served as an advisor of PTK at Clark State since 2008. More than 40 students have accepted the invitation this spring to join PTK—the world’s largest honor society for two-year college students.

Eligible students were notified by the national PTK organization. Qasim encourages all eligible students to join the honor society, and she strives to make them aware of the benefits of being a member. Members of PTK have the opportunity to work on college and honors projects.

“We received the Catch a Shining Star Award for the college success project at the Ohio regional conference,” said Qasim who was also awarded the John Kesseler award for Outstanding Advisor. “Also, we are gearing up for the Relay for Life on June 2, and our goal is to raise $1,000.”

Qasim said this year’s group of inductees are a hardworking, creative and fun loving group of students. Clark State ANL member Tabitha Miles became the Southwest district region officer. She competed against six other candidates for the position.

To be an eligible candidate for PTK, students must have completed at least 12 credit hours at the college and have a minimum 3.5 grade point average. Students pay a one-time fee of $80 for a lifetime membership. Membership benefits include scholarships; free enrollment in CollegeFish.org, a transfer and college completion planning tool; free access to Five Star Competitive Edge, a personal and professional development plan for building marketable skills and an online portfolio; increased pay grade for entry-level federal jobs; tuition discounts; and more.

Alpha Nu Lambda was named a Five Star chapter in 2015 and 2016. There are more than 40 PTK chapters in the Ohio region.
