Clark State’s 21st Annual Soul Food Sampling February 25

February 23, 2016

Clark State Community College will host the 21st Annual Soul Food Sampling from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, February 25 at the Hollenbeck Bayley Creative Arts and Conference Center, 275 South Limestone Street in Springfield.

As part of the College’s Black History Month celebration, the event features samples of soul food from Chanhl’s Catering Company, live music and entertainment.

“The Soul Food Sampling was started as a Black History Month event to showcase the cooking of different soul food from people at the College and in the community,” said Corey Holliday, director of community outreach for Clark State.

Reverend Kristopher L. Peterson, pastor of People’s Baptist Church in Springfield will be the keynote speaker at the Soul Food Sampling. Peterson hails from Jefferson Township. While still in college, his ministry began as an associate minister and Young Adult Sunday School teacher at Greater Harvest Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton. During his tenure, he went on to serve as a youth minister at Mt. Zion MBC in Springfield before receiving his ministry license in 2001 and was ordained in 2005.

“Kris is by far one of the most dynamic speakers that I have come across in a long time,” said Holliday. “Besides his professional life as a highly ranked civilian at Wright Patterson, he got his calling to the ministry at a very young age.”

Reverend Peterson also teaches youth at Horace Mann Elementary School through the Sonshine Club and is leading an after-school program to mentor graduating seniors for college and a successful life outside of high school.

Additional entertainment will include Joseph Glenn playing the steel drums.

“Soul Food is truly a community event,” said Holliday. “This is just one way for Clark State to say ‘thank you’ to our community.”
