Clark State Community College will launch a new Honors Program beginning in the fall semester of the 2016-17 academic year.
The Honors Program will offer enhanced courses and recognition to students with outstanding academic potential and promote personal and civic responsibility through service to others. The program aims to equip students to engage in academic and community leadership.
“At Clark State, we want to serve everyone,” said Dr. Amit Singh, provost and vice president of Clark State. “This program will serve students who want a rigorous and enriched academic experience.”
The Honors Program is available to current Clark State students, new students and also high school students enrolled through the College Credit Plus Program. Singh said College Credit Plus students, however, must be attending classes on a Clark State campus where the Honors classes will be offered.
There are a total of nine Honors courses available ranging from English to World Philosophy. The courses are scheduled to allow students a minimum of two options per semester in the fall and spring. Students accepted into the program must be enrolled in at least six college credits each semester. The Honors Program will also offer a limited number of scholarships to eligible students.
In addition to maintaining a 3.3 grade point average, Honors Program students will be required to participate in college activities and community service.
Throughout the program, students will be recognized annually for their achievements. At the Eagle Award level, students must have successfully completed three Honors courses with the grade of a B or higher. The Honors Scholar level is achieved when a student completes six Honors courses with the grade of a B or higher.
“An added benefit to the Honors Program is it makes the student stand out in the crowd,” said Singh. “Especially when you have this program on your resume or on your diploma when you are competing to get into a four-year school or apply for a job. It helps students excel when there are many people applying for things.”
