The third annual Matthew Yates Memorial Basketball Tournament will take place at 9 a.m. on March 29 at Tecumseh High School, 9830 W. National Road in New Carlisle. Proceeds from the event benefit the Clark State College Matthew Yates Memorial Scholarship, an initiative that pays homage to Yates, a member of the Clark County Sheriff's Department who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving his community in July 2022.
“We are so excited to host the third annual tournament. We are very grateful for the community support that we receive each year to honor such a great man,” said Tracy Yates, wife of Matthew. “We hope that everyone can join us day of to celebrate Matthew and have some fun!”
With more than $27,000 raised in 2024, the event features 20 teams competing in the basketball tournament. There is no admission fee, but donations will be accepted. Donations can also be made online at go.clarkstate.edu/matthew-yates-2025-donations.
“This tournament is always a great event. It provides a chance for our community to come together, have fun, and support future public servants in honor of Matt’s memory,” said Toni Overholser, Clark State’s vice president of advancement and outreach. “The funds raised will directly impact students who are pursuing careers in law enforcement, criminal justice, corrections or mental health, furthering Matt’s lasting legacy.”
Clark State offers four academies each year that meet the requirements of the Ohio Police Officer Training Council and are offered in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies, the State of Ohio and OPOTC.
